I recently had 2 stints put in heart. Can I have a couple of beers now and then or every night? I quit drinking after the stints were put in. I don't miss the beer so much but don't like a empty stomach when going to bed. I also take about a hour to get to sleep now. I drink for the taste not the effect and I am not lying to myself about drinking beer only. I do not drink hard drinks at all, not in 35 years.

Recently, I got my clinical test done and results shows that I have high LDL Cholosterol Level of 272. Ratio between LDL and HDL is unhealthy. Since last 2 years I have also abstained from any physical activity or exercise. Probably it is more to do with more saturated vis-a-vis carbohydrate diet. I am aware that there are so many factors held responsible for increasing cholosterol. Please advise.

I am taking a lot of satain drugs, like 40mg Lipator, 145mg Tri-cor, 40 mg Toporal XL, 160 mg Diovan and 325mg EC aspirin. I had a heart attack 3 years ago and received a stint and quit smoking. The following year I had a gall bladder attack and had it removed. I was in good health and have gained over 25 pounds. I was never told why I was taking all this medicine. I exercise 3 times a week and have taken up yoga lessons. I never took medicine except when I got real sick which was not too often. I am very active and now I perspire a lot and have a lot of gas. Is there something else I can do beside take all these RX? I have gotten some thing from the Health Food store which I intend to start taking. Any help would be appreciated. I am 70 years old and am active.

I have high blood presure and my colesteral is very high my Doctor has me on Banicar and Vytorin! I have been over weight most of my life it is a battle that just is so hard to over come not very good eating habbits from growing up.
I had a brother Tim who lost his life at age 43 do to high colesteral and the autopsy showed he would have only lived 5 years at the most. I have a sister that had a heart attack at age 52 if she would not have been rushed in she would not be here today! I also have another brother that had a heart attack a few years ago and he has stints in his arteries as my sister does. All I want to know is the foods to stay away from that is making this colesteral so high. I would like to have a diet mapped out to where I could really fallow it. I have so much to live for a brand new grand daughter and I want to be here for her and my daughter. If you could send me some information to help me stick to any kind of diet I sure would appreasate it very much. thank you so much for your time

My son was just diagnosed with high colesteral...both hdl and ldl and was told to do special diet for this. I'm not sure he understands the diet regiment. He is 35 years old and my father died at age 47 of heart desease. Don't know if he's inherited any thing, but want to make sure his diet is what he's supposed to be eating. He's not overweight and has pretty much the last 2 years been eating the weight watcher diet with his wife, so I'm truly surprised at this finding. Please help me with some menu ideas of what he should be eating. Thanx

Hi, had 7.0 cholesterol reading last October following hospital test. Had an electronic reading done at a pharmacy at beginning of April and it was 4.97 - so I felt quite proud that I had managed to reduce it, only to discover on next hospital test reading that it was in fact 6.2 and this last reading only being done a week after the 4.97 result! The pharmacy use a small electronic tester and pinprick from finger but the hospital took a small tube full of blood. I faster for 14 hours prior to all tests. Any comment pl on fluctuation? thanks,
Faith

Hi,I am 39 yeras ols , male working in a steel co. I put on a lot of wt. in last one year after I stopped playing and went upto 90 Kg. I had no pain from inside but mild pain in the chest when I pressed the fingrs over the chest area at some specific places. normal pulse beat is around 66 and on climbing stairs goes upto 120/min and returns back within 10-15 sec to about 80 and then to normal level. I had an ECG where doctor said everything was normal but had some non-pathological q- wave and to rule out that they recommended first an 2d-echo and if required a tmt. But after 2d - echo they said tmt was not required as readings were absolutely normal. I have reduced 8 kgs in three months by diet control and 45 min brisk walking every day . sometimes specific point pains are there when i press with a finger from outside in chest area but no shortness of breath while waking or pain from inside.i had a hdl of 55, ldl-143 , total cholestrol of 235 , bp- 130/86 and fasting blood sugar of 104. can these point pains be because of artery blockage of are as the doctor said- no-specific muscle pain due to the new exercise schedule. i am confused. pls explain

I am 26 years old and for about 4 months I have been having severe back pain in the middle of my back. Occasionally my left arm aches (maybe two or three times ever) Also I have some kind of heart palpitation which only happens once every couple of months or maybe longer when I have this it takes my breath. Could I have heart disease or maybe have a heart attack I am very worried. Also, one night I went to the ER and had a normal EKG and a normal Catscan of my heart. Blood pressure is always okay.

I do not smoke, drink red wine in moderation, eat fresh fruits/vegs. but with a tendency to also eat sweets cakes etc. not every day but perhaps a couple of times a week, which I am now cutting completely. What is the ideal cholesterol level and what additional actions can I take to reduce my cholesterol?

I recently had to have a heart scan. Afterwards I was told I had thickening of the muscles around my heart and there was too much fluid around it too. I have been referred to see the heart specialist at our local hospital. Could you tell me what these symptons mean please, and what treatment I can expect to receive. Or if you are too busy, could you direct me to this information on your website. I'm still following your low chol diet and have lost another 2lb's so I'm hoping my chol level is coming down. Thank you. Yours truly
Anne Renshaw.

I am a 57 year old woman with type II diabetis, high chloesterol, and lactose intolerent woman. I have problems walking any distance because I broke my back several years ago and short distances cause extreme pain in my back and leg. I also have neuropathy in my right leg from my diabetis. It is very hard to do much of anything, and I do not eat that much, but cannot take off the weight. I was on steroids for my bronchitus and put on over 50 pounds being on them and cannot get it off. I can't seem to eat a lot because if I do it gives me diarrhea and severe bloating.

I am a fit, slim, healthy 52 yr old lady and had a cholesterol level of 5.8 earlier this year and was told just to eat healthily. I did this and lost a stone which I hadn'intended to, making me very underweight. I decided to eat anything and everything to regain the weight, which I have. As a consequence my cholesterol is now 6.3, which the receptionist at my G.Ps insists is normal and I don't need to do anything. I am so confused as I am being told from every source that it should be below 5. Could you advise me please.

My husband is 50 years old, only slightly overweight and has just been told that he has high cholesterol, high blood sugar and meduim/high blood pressure, not yet severe enough to require medication. I want to help him to sort this out and your dietary advice seemed clear and easy to follow but is there anything further that I could do to help alleviate the blood pressure and sugar problems? I do not know if it is relevant but he suffers from Ankylosing Spondilitis and has been taking anti inflamatories and a buffer for about 14 years, unfortunately this also means that too much exercise is a bit counterproductive.

I'm just turned 60 and always thought of myself as fit and I feel well in myself. I have recently found that I have high blood pressure with high cholesterol and sugar levels. I am therefore trying to eat a more healthy diet avoiding fats, salt, alcohol and sugar. Oh, yes, and I found out 2 years ago that I have become alergic to onion. Lately I don't seem to get many invites to dinner parties. Can't think why !!!

I am 27 years old with high cholesterol. My cholesterol was checked at the age of 13, and I was told it was high then, and put on a special diet, I am slim, but have a family history of high cholesterol levels and heart attacks. My grandma on my dad's site died of a heart attack at the young age of 40, and she had high cholesterol as well. I often have chest pain, irregular heart beats (fluttering at times), and frequent headaches. My doctor put me on a special diet, which is extremely hard to follow through with, and my cholesterol is checked regularly but continues to be high. I also had some tests ran on my heart, but everything seemed to be okay. If it is, then why am I having these symptoms? Thanks so much.

Hi, I am 46 years old and I had a complete hysterectomy 4 years ago. Since my surgery I went from 135lbs to a horrible 215lbs. I am taking no hormone replacement therapy. I decided to have my chloresterol checked last week and I am glad I did. My chloresterol and triglycerides were sky high and now I am a little scared! What should I do and what kind of a diet should I go on? I have been reading a lot about thyroid and hearing that thyroid medicine could help me lose weight and put me on the right track. Thank you so very much for reading my e-mail and I look forward to your response.

Hi. My mom recently underwent open heart surgery to replace her aortic valve (June 10, 2005). Since then, she has been complaining that nothing tastes the same or seems so "sweet" that it makes her sick. Just wondering if others have complained of similar problems and what, if anything, can be done to help her begin to enjoy food again.

Hi!! I was just wondering really about my Husbands Cholestrol Levels. He has been told they are 6.9 - is this the highest Cholestrol can go?? Is is in danger of having a heart attack now?? His is 34 and he smoked fro 10 years / he gave up ciggerates one week ago today when he found out his cholestrol was high. He is 14.5 stone and 5ft 9 inches / he is overweight and has had a lot of
stress in the last two years / I moved jobs so did he. We sold our ouw house and had a lot of stress buying our own. I had a bit of a breakdown after we lost a baby (miscarraige) Just one month before that he was in a serious accident where he lost a lot of blood and nearly had to have a blood transfusion !!!! Two arterys in the side of his head were severed. He was only in hospital for one night but still very stressful and everything that happened afterwards. He is traveling a long distance to and from work every day. He walks 2 or 3 times a week and also plays golf once a week. We have now upped exercise and are
going to start jogging. We have cut out red meat almost completely. The doctor has given him a weeks supply of lippo (spelling) to lower his cholestrol and give him a kick start. Can you let me know what you think of his chances are at the moment. Kind regards,
Alison Brennan

I would like to know what the side effects of Pravachol are. I had been on Lipitor and was having leg cramps. My Dr. took me off for two weeks. Didn't have cramp one. she decided to put me on Pravachol and 5 days after I started taking it, my fingers got cramps and woke up this morning with cramps in the back of both legs. Have been really tired all day with legs, arm and whole body aching. was just wondering if Pravachol would cause this to happen. Just curious.

Hi: I was just diagnosed with high cholesterol level (both bad & good have skyrocketed), not to mention my blood pressure has also. Seems my liver enzymes are high also, but that's being monitored as I write this. I am 44 year old male; thought I was eating well being I'm of a Greek Mediterranean background, but I guess I was overdoing it with sweets and fats. Any suggestions on daily recipes, foods, certain regiments to follow that will help lower my bad cholesterol and get my good one in shape as well? Looking forward to hearing from you.

My father is 47 and has terminal heart disease, he is on so much medication, also being taken care of by hospice. I'm 27 years old mysely, I had some test ran and found out all is good for the most part, my cholesterol is 204, i was told to eat less fast food or fried food, so I'm trying to do so. I also has an ehco cardio test done and thet found something on my mitrol valve but said it was too small to tell what exactly it was. They said I should get it checked out every couple of years to see if it's getting bigger. As you can imagine that made me pretty nervous. I am very active, run about 10miles a week and also do weight training. I'm about 5'10 and I weigh about 155 lbs. I'm trying to figure out a better diet for myself so I don't end up like my Father, Do you have any suggestions?

Yesterday I was told I had high cholestral and as I come from a family of death from heart attack, I have to exercise more and avoid certain foods. My diet is quite good but I do like my wine. I am a 68 year old grandmother, play tennis and table tennis every week and work in a shop two days a week on a voluntary basis. I also look after my 5 grandchildren at different times aged 15 to 5 years, so you can see I am very active. My chloresterol level was down to 4.7 after many years being around 6.8. However when I finished my tablets (Lipitor) a couple of months ago I had 2 or 3 days without them and felt more energetic and better altogether. However after having a blood test the other day after 2 months without medication it had gone up to 7 which shocked me. I stick to a pretty good diet "mostly" as much as I can but your sensible diet will help me be much more aware of the correct food to eat daily. My doctor has put me on (Ezetrol)as other medications have adverse effects on me.So thank you for your information.

i actually have a question about my mom who is 53. Her insurance recently went up cause they said she had high blood pressure and high cholesterol, the kind that causes coranary heart disease. My question is, does this mean that she already has clogged arteries? and if so, is it reversable? i'm worried and am taking this serious because i lost my dad 2 years ago to a sudden massive heart attack! we had no idea he wasn't healthy. I will take every measure to make sure this doesn't happen to my mom and i know she will too. ( she does have several aunts who battle high cholesterol )

The main problem is he does virtually no exercise and his diet is a disgrace! I am at a total loss how to help him achieve this since my parents' diet consists of pastries, cakes, pies, potatoes and mince! They do not eat, and will not try, fruit, pasta, rice or any other 'foreign' type food. Help!

I'm absolutely dumbfounded. I'm 40 years old and never felt fitter in my life. I regularly run distances of up to half a marathon and swim a mile probably 4 times a week. I am obsessed by eating healthily, vegetables, salads, fish, fruit and nuts; I juice fruit and veg every day, use only extra virgin olive oil, do not have a sweet tooth at all, i rarely eat red meat. read loads of literature on all this kind of stuff and really conscious about it.etc.
HOWEVER, just received results of medical I had pre christmas and been diagnosed with high cholestorol (mg/dl 231 or mmol/L 5.98) I'm not entirely sure what these figures refer to but am informed they're high.
I try to avoid 2 of my 3 vices, cheese and potato crisps, reasonably successfully and certainly eat them less than most people i know. i do drink more than i should but am not aware this alcohol is responsible for high cholestorol. In fact i've been informed that it can actually reduce bad cholesterol. Basically i'd really appreciate some advice on all this. Thanks a lot.

Dear Sir, I read a report some time ago that if one's HDL was 25% (or above)of the overall cholestoral reading, one would be safe from CHD.Is there truth in this statement?? I hope this is true,as I have found it is easier to increase HDL by diet and excersise than it is to reduce LDL.I HAVE ALSO READ OF SOME DANGERS RELATED TO REDUCING LDL.!!
I really look forward to your comments. A very interesting site Thank you.

Hello there, despite me taking statins my recent blood test came back showing that my Cholestrol is above 7.0. This is unacceptable at the best of times but as I have confirmed angina my doctor tells me this is not on. He has changed my medication and hopefully this will help reduce the cholestrol levels. I cannot understand because I am very careful with my diet which appears to conform with your recommended diet. However,I do have two glasses of white wine per day, is this likely to raise my cholestrol? I have been told that my liver produces bad cholestrol. Can you explain this to me please?. And I would also like to know whether excise is an effective way of reducing levels, bearing in mine that I am 65 years old (I do walk). I look forwarding to hearing from you keep up the good work.

I have been informed that my chloresterol was not good. 320 I have also noticed once in a while my lower legs ache and sometimes just one. I also have heart flutters. I've cut back on my caffeine, and try to walk often. I'm in my 50's and not over weight. Does this sound like the beginning of heart problems.

My partner has beensuffering from work related stress and has been having severe headaches so went today for an eye test. They said his eyes had white spots which is a sign of high cholestoral levels. I think I give him a good diet of chicken fresh vegetables, salad, tuna, pasta no roasts. I always steam vegetables, no gravy, use emlea and not cream. He does not drink alcohol only occasionally. He does drink a lot of coffee and 2sugars but that is all. He is a heavy smoker but going to try to give up. I wonder what I can do to lower his cholestoral levels. He doesn't like fish and never eats fruit. He does have a sweet tooth but I don't buy sweets only cerealbars at theweekend

Very frustrated and concerned for the future! I have relatively high cholestral levels with a total count of 5.9 with high LDL levels. I am not on cholestral lowering drugs but I know Statins work. I have tried the low fat diet and exercise but no joy. I do believe this is a hereditary condition as there is a history of heart conditions in my family. I am 36 and do not want to take statins as I fear for the long term affects and find it difficult to tolerate the side effects. Can you please advise anything that may reduce my LDL levels without taking medication. Many thanks.

I've finally succumbed to a doctor's warning and am now taking medicine for the cholesterol and high blood pressure. I don't trust the medicine and I want to take responsibility for dealing with these problems myself.
Please help me know what to eat and what to do. I'll take it from there. The doctor seems utterly lost when I mention homeopathic remedies and/or diet! I will take responsibility for the condition of my body. I need information!!

I'm queen size and have never had any diseases associated with being overweight before.
